Of all the teams vying for the honor of being college basketball's first Reverse Survivor winner, one caught my eye above all others. I was warned about making his declaration, on the grounds that it might constitute institutional bias and thereby sully the entire process, but I don't care. It must be said:
The New Jersey Institute of Technology is the shit.
I arrived at this conclusion last night. Looking through the Division 1 basketball standings, I couldn't help but notice the school at the bottom of the Independents list, defined only by its 0-12 record and four letter abbreviation, N.J.I.T. Upon further examination, including a visit to the athletics web site, I uncovered a number of facts about the school and its athletic program that instantly piqued my interest. For instance:
1) NJIT's sports teams are known as the Highlanders. If this doesn't result in approximately 57,275 jokes about Adrian Paul, Christopher Lambert's accent, and "There can be only one!", I will be sorely disappointed in myself.
2) The front page of the "official athletic web site" features a countdown to the men's volleyball season opener in the upper right corner. I don't think anything could ever make me watch men's volleyball.
3) A check of the "Notable Alumni" section on the school's Wikipedia page reveals company presidents, two inventors, a string theorist, an astronaut...and "Rah Digga, American Rapper, member of Flipmode Squad".
4) The leading scorer on the basketball team is named Nesho Milosevic. His last name was the first thing that caught my eye, but I also giggled at the fact that the members of his family are named Nebojsa, Snezana, Milos...and Steven.
5) Again, according to Wikipedia, "NJIT is currently ranked by Princeton Review as #2 in the Nation for Least Happy Students. In recent years, it has been ranked #1 in this category three times (2002-2005), and #5 once (2005-2006 academic year)."
If the Reverse Survivor champion was chosen based on awesomeness, we would have our winner already, and it wouldn't even be close. Even if not all of that stuff is true (and I'm not 100% sold on number five, but I can't possibly leave something like that out), this is quite obviously one of the greatest schools ever. I'm not sure we'll find any other college or university that is so clearly deserving of being the first with its name engraved on the Reverse Survivor plaque. Now, it's up to the basketball team to follow through. I have to think that anything better than 0-28 will be viewed as a disappointment.

NJIT's season is a documentary, and the events took place in real time.
Man, what was the administration doing wrong in '05? I mean, you have #1 in your hands, and you just let it slip away? Must have handed out keychains at student orientation or something.
I'm actually an alumnus of NJIT, albeit not a notable one (yet?). The volleyball team was (is?) nationally ranked and one of the highlights of the university. What you fail to mention is that the school is located in lovely Newark, NJ, which typically ranks in the top 25 in highest crime per capita and is located across the street from Central High School which is everything you expect from an inner city high school named Central. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help my prestigious alma mater win the coveted Reverse Survivor Award.
I, too, am an alumnus. I actually played (if you can call sitting on the bench "playing") baseball my freshman year there, which is more an indictment of the low grade of NJIT athletics rather than my own prowess. Nice to see they have new uniforms. The fact that Basketball is a D-1 sport is mind blowing, really. I hope for the notoritety of reverse survivor only because my experience with the school is in line with those rankings.
Sometimes you have to drop to almost the bottom to improve....then there is sufficient rooms-for-improvement and compelling reasons to improve...
a) The criminals in the city tried to kill the new mayor after he won the election because he was going to increase the no of officers petrolling in the city... look out for drops in crime rates... Incidentally, NJIT is buying over Central High School (see http://media.www.njitvector.com/media/storage/paper1009/news/2007/10/16/News/Central.High.To.Be.Njit.Property-3038668.shtml)
b) The NJIT D1 baseball team did great in the first D1 year being ranked RPI 266 ahead of 27 other established D1 schools. The school is backing them with a 10-year arrangement to play at the Bears and Eagles Stadium giving them on of the best D1 baseball home courts in the nation.
c) Men's volleyball is back in the best possible senario since they would be promoted back to Tait Division of EIVA after winning the Hay division Championship in 2007. Look out for them to be ranked again in 2008...ooops but this is only for those who know how to appreciate the sports...
d) Campus life at NJIT would be getting better....the new Student's Center is completed....they are building a new Greek Village and would be revitalizing the neightbouring street together with the city. See http://gateway.njit.edu/ . In 2004, you would get basketball games with only about 150 people watching... this season, the home attendance average is more than 1000....so the students are enjoying more in college..
e) The basketball team in indeed performing worse-than-expected but it is a rebuilding year for them with them fielding most number of freshmen in every game..look out for them to perform next season and for them to win a few this season. The last game against Big-East giant Rutgers, it only lost by 10 pts...Some wins would be coming this way very soon.....otherwise, it would be hard to justify the expenditure to house them in the best arena in the country (the Prudential Center)...
